Painting in Nature

Today's featured painting is titled "Windy Day on the Intercoastal Waterway" [Sold]. This narrow strip of land is part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore, with the distant shore being Pensacola, FL. I would have painted on the Gulf side but the wind was blowing the sand too much. I also wanted to try out my new umbrella that attaches to my easel but I'm afraid I would have flown away like Mary Poppins. The alternate title is "Fine Day for getting Old" because I painted it on my birthday.
Notice that I start on a canvas toned with a warm wash because it contrasts with all the blues and greens of landscapes and seascapes. This painting is predominantly of the sky and I think conveys the feeling of the windblown clouds.
